PhD position in Liverpool 2019

Multiscale Quasiperiodic Metamaterials:

The project involves fabricating quasicrystalline metamaterials at multiple scale lengths (microns to mm) using 3-d printing methodologies and investigating the propagation of photons through these materials, seeking for possible applications in photonics. This is a joint project with engineering.  Further details available at https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/multiscale-quasiperiodic-metamaterials/?p106360.

The candidate should have, or expect to have, at least a 2:1 degree or equivalent in Physics or Chemistry or Material Engineering. Applicants should be resident in the UK or the EU. The award will pay full tuition fees and a maintenance grant for 3.5 years (currently £14,777 p.a.)  Please contact Dr. Hem Raj Sharma or Prof Ronan McGrath if you are interested for the positions.

PhD position in Liverpool 2019

New Horizons in Quasicrystals:

This PhD project deals with the atomic scale characterization of growth of thin films on surfaces of quasicrystals using surface science techniques such as Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM), Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), and X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS). Further details available at https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/new-horizons-in-quasicrystals/?p106182

Ab-initio investigations of complex intermetallics surfaces : from structures to properties

The purpose of the work is to understand and design complex intermetallic surfaces down to atomic and
electronic scales, in relation to several potential applications (as catalysts or functional coatings, among others).
Areas of interest include, but are not restricted to, electronic properties, computational catalysis, modeling of
molecular films on intermetallic surfaces. Methods will be based on density functional theory and possible
machine learning approaches, in collaboration with the neighboring research lab in computer sciences (Loria,
Nancy).
